To crash the critic saying, "Is it right or is it wrong?" I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong It may not be my favorite Gaga song, but I understand its importance on the ARTPOP cycle. it's supposed to be an encore of sorts, to cheer the validation of her work, and give the whole album the legitimacy that Gaga craves. and in this particular setting, the way to show that you approve and feel connected to her work is with applause. this validation gives her music the value it needs to be great art, because Gaga is really post-modern and they're all about this type of thing. as long as her music resonates with her fans, with those people who appreciate her music and give it legitimacy, her art is validated.Īs an artist, this validation is what she lives for, this is why she's working so hard to make her music. Why does she do this? because the song is really about what she believes gives art credibility and value. So Gaga writes Applause, and it's placed as the final song on the album. as the ARTPOP song explicitly told us, "my artpop could mean anything" in this particular instance, she is attempting to give artistic credit to pop music, and giving it legitimacy in the art world. Gaga loves concept albums, and everything she has released so far has been one. I just wanted to add a tiny little bit, which will solidify the intent of the song, and something I've written before in this sub. I look forward to more discussion (particularly as we get to hear more of ARTPOP)! (I personally argue that this is the very trait that makes her the true superstar she is set apart from other pop singers and performers because of it.) This is made extremely clear in the line: " Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me." She is making it even more obvious to on-lookers that without the power to entertain and inspire and create, she has no place on this world. Obviously it could also be acting, writing, dancing, etc. It's craving an audience to appreciate what has been created. But the reality is that it's not craving attention for attention's sake. Craving attention is simply a trait that is common and useful amongst expert performers (Gaga included). This song is not necessarily about how she craves attention. I also want to address the statements made by those who 1) don't understand Gaga's position on performing or 2) aren't in the position themselves and have trouble seeing from a performer's eyes. Because of her enormous level of fame, this may seem like a meaningless touch, but in reality it displays how raw she views her fame (and how appreciative she is of her fans, whom she missed dearly as noted in the lines). Gaga is blatantly saying that she wishes her fame had a "valve" of sorts, so that she could ensure an audience for her music. " If only fame had an I.V., baby could I bearīeing away from you, I found the vein, put it in here." But to analyze deeper, I'll pull out my favorite lyric. Applause has always been the most feasible method of telling a performer (particularly beginning in on-stage theatre) that you approve and enjoy what they have given you. We can all agree that the core of "Applause" is Lady Gaga's craving for a positive reaction to her music. This includes asking the community for followers on a social media site such as Twitter.
